Wool Care FAQ

A little gentle care can help your handmade pieces stay looking their best. Materials, decorations and construction vary, so always follow the care instructions supplied with your particular item. This guide applies to wool items only, not automatically to every product in our shop. Some of our coasters are diamond art rather than wool.

Are wool coasters absorbent or waterproof?

Wool can take up moisture, but a wool coaster should not be treated as waterproof or as a guaranteed barrier against spills. How much moisture reaches the surface beneath depends on the item's construction and backing. Wipe up spills promptly, check underneath the coaster and take extra care on delicate furniture. Do not use a coaster as a trivet unless it is specifically described as suitable.

What should I do if I spill something?

Lift the item away from the surface beneath it and gently blot with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or wringing. Before using water or a cleaning product, check the item's care instructions. Where spot-cleaning is permitted, test an inconspicuous area first and use only a small amount of the recommended cleaner. Stop if colour transfers or the texture changes. Ask us for advice about stubborn stains or decorated pieces rather than trying bleach or a strong stain remover.

Can I machine-wash a wool cushion cover?

Only machine-wash a cover if its own care label or instructions explicitly allow it. The word “wool” alone does not mean an item is machine-washable, and a wool cycle is not a guarantee of suitability. Yarn, backing, seams and decorations can require different care. If washing instructions are missing, please contact us before washing. Remove the cushion insert only if the cover is designed to be removable, and follow the insert's separate care instructions.

How can I reduce the risk of shrinkage or loss of shape?

Follow the item's specified washing method and temperature. Heat, friction and sudden temperature changes can affect some wool items. Avoid vigorous rubbing, twisting, wringing and tumble-drying unless expressly permitted. If washing is allowed, gently remove excess moisture as directed, support the item's shape and dry flat away from radiators and direct heat. Do not stretch a damp cover back onto an insert.

What if the wool develops little bobbles?

Some wool yarns develop small pills where fibres rub together; the amount varies with the yarn and use. Do not pull bobbles or loose strands, as this can damage the stitches. Ask us which removal method is suitable for your item before using a fabric shaver, comb or scissors, especially around textured stitches and decorations.

How should I store wool items away from moths?

Store items clean and completely dry, following their care instructions before packing them away. Use a clean, well-sealed storage container or bag in a cool, dry place, and check stored items regularly for damp or signs of insects. Clean the surrounding cupboard or drawer too. Cedar or lavender may add a pleasant scent, but do not rely on them as guaranteed moth protection. If you find signs of moths, separate the affected item and seek suitable treatment advice before applying chemicals or heat.

Does this advice apply to diamond-art coasters?

No. Do not soak or wash a diamond-art coaster using wool-care methods. Its decorative surface, adhesive and backing may need different care. Follow the instructions supplied with that coaster, or contact us before cleaning it.

Not sure which care instructions apply?

Contact C.t.woollies with the product name and, if possible, a photo of the item and its care label. We can confirm the appropriate care before you wash or treat it.
